CHARLESTON Authorities say a young man accidentally shot and killed himself as he was getting into a sport utility vehicle when a pistol in the back pocket of his low-hanging pants discharged.

Charleston County Coroner Rae Wooten said 19-year-old Dionta Cochran was shot in the chest when a bullet from a .32-caliber pistol passed through his clothing, striking him as he bent forward, possibly to shut the door. Wooten did not know why the gun fired, the (Charleston) Post and Courier reported Saturday.

Cochrans death initially was considered a homicide. The North Charleston man was found dead in a driveway July 13.

Police charged Cochrans cousin and a friend with trying to hide Cochrans gun and another gun before police arrived.

Cochrans half-brother was shot to death in 2006.

A pistol in the back pocket hitting the guy in the chest? How could that happen? You would think he put the gun in his pocket with the butt (no pun intended) pointing upward, so that would be a feat to hit him in the chest. I need to know more of this story...

Sounds like Mother Nature wants the Cochran boys out of the gene pool...

Darwinism works in mysterious ways. Nothing to see here.

I can see that easily happening when the back pocket is down around your knees, gun pointed up, he bends forward to close the door and the gun goes off because it's cocked and not in a holster, bullet travels up between his legs hitting him in his chest.

Remember the 4 rules of gun safety: :emotions16:

1. Treat all guns as if they're loaded.
2. Never point the muzzle at anything you're not willing to destroy.
3. Keep your finger off the trigger until you're ready to shoot.
4. Be sure of your target and it's backstop.

Let's see, he failed on 1 and 2.

50%. No wonder he's dead.

You beat me to it. Darwinism - still acceptable, even if only one spoonful at a time.
Take care,

Dionta didn't have much of a chance from the moment he was named. It they had called him something like Max, Jerry or Fred things might have turned out differently.

You may be thinking of pants, as in the garments worn by civilized human beings.

Instead, think really baggy, and way down low. Back pocket = knee or calf area when standing, possibly ankle when sitting.

While getting into or out of a vehicle the gun could have been pointing in any direction at any given moment.

Whatever happened, there is one less person named "Dionta," walking the face of the Earth, and for that I think we should all be grateful.:applause_

Indeed, that accidental discharge has saved any number of lives.

Re: Low-hanging pants caused fatal gunshot

I always thought low hanging plants were dangerous, in a light breeze and low light condition they can be mistaken for a suspicious looking character seemingly threatening to an approaching observer. Also, one can bump their head in to a low hanging plant causing serious personal injury. I think all low hanging plants should be raised above head level or be replanted in ... Oh wait... the thread says low hanging pants... never mind.

Re: Low-hanging pants caused fatal gunshot

As people were trying to hide the gun when the cops arrived I am betting events did not evolve in the manner they were told to the cops. I also suspect that the deceased did not have a CCW with the failed attempt at evidence tampering. I wonder if there was a paraffin test done on those present? I think either someone there shot him (on purpose or accidentally) or the gun is question was a POS with a floating firing pin like a Raven and was dropped.
